Examining the evolution of automotive manufacturing employment and skills in Canada

‘Making Plans for Nigel’: Inclusive Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in the Education System

Objectives and Areas of Focus

There are three key areas of activity that we are focused on: research and analysis, operations/training, and stakeholder engagement. Some of our specific objectives include: engaging industry stakeholders in actionable discussions about labour market challenges, supporting employers in meeting these labour market challenges, helping leaders in the automotive industry recruit and train an evolving workforce, providing access to job training and hiring grants, supporting the sector and stakeholders to adjust to the decarbonization of the economy and the digitization of production in the sector and increasing diversity in the automotive workforce.

Occupational Profiles

Our occupational profiles will be shared in order to educate current and prospective members of the automotive sector. These reports will share details on lifetime earnings, current earnings, mobility into management and other sectors, new tech and opportunities to learn, new opportunities due to demographics and more.

Upcoming Events

FOCAL regularly hosts complimentary webinars discussing labour market supply and demand, skills shortages, future jobs and employment forecasts, labour market impacts related to the shift from ICE to EVs and more.

FOCAL Data Dashboard

To further help users dig into our data, we have developed an interactive dashboard tool that allows users to select their region’s data and graphically display them. The tool is intuitive and easy to use and you can go directly to it HERE  Please note that while the dashboard is configured in English, it provides access to our forecasts for Quebec as a whole and for the Montreal region.

About

The Future of Canadian Automotive Labourforce (FOCAL) Initiative, funded in part by the Government of Canada (Sectoral Workforce Solutions Program), is a collaboration of the Canadian Skills Training and Employment Coalition (CSTEC), the Automotive Policy Research Centre (APRC) and Prism Economics and Analysis.

Over a three year lifespan starting in mid-2019, the FOCAL initiative will produce current labour market information related to Canada’s automotive manufacturing sector, examine key trends affecting the automotive labour market, and forecast supply and demand for key occupations in the broader automotive sector.

Our research and other findings will be provided to employers at all tiers in Canada’s broader automotive sector, as well as to educators, students, job-seekers, policy makers at all levels of government, labour organizations, and other nongovernmental stakeholders in this important segment of Canada’s manufacturing industry.
